Terms, privacy and what happens if you leave.
Written to be read, not to be survived. We build you a site and hand you a login so you can change the words, prices and pictures yourself. You pay once to build it, then monthly to keep it running. Bug fixes are free forever. Thirty days’ notice to leave, and the domain and content are yours.
01 — Terms and conditions
What’s included
We build you a website and hand you a simple back office so you can change the words, prices and pictures yourself, whenever you like.
You pay once to build it, then a monthly fee covering hosting, your domain and keeping it running.
Packages
Portfolio — £400 to build, £60 a month. A full website designed around your work, your own login to add, edit and remove pieces, text, prices and photographs, an enquiry form that sends messages straight to your inbox, and hosting, security certificate, domain and backups.
Portfolio + Shop — £550 to build, £85 a month. Everything in Portfolio, plus card checkout so customers can buy directly from the site, delivery address collected at checkout with postage options you set, an orders page showing what has sold and where it needs to go, and automatic receipts sent to your customers.
Paying
The build fee is payable before work starts. The monthly fee begins on the day the site goes live and is paid monthly.
There is no minimum term and no annual contract.
Domains
Your domain is registered in your name, not ours. You own it, and you can take it elsewhere at any time.
Any domain renewing at under £40 a year is covered by your monthly fee. If you want a domain that costs more than that to renew — some endings such as .art, .studio and .shop are considerably more expensive — the difference above £40 is added to your monthly fee. We will always tell you the price before anything is registered.
Changes after launch
Bug fixes — something on the site is broken or not working as it should. Always free, for as long as you are with us. If something breaks, tell us.
Content changes — new pieces, new photographs, new prices, changing the wording. You do these yourself through your login; that is what the back office is for, and it means you never have to wait on us to update your own website. We will show you how it works before launch.
Design or structural changes — new pages, changes to the layout or navigation, new features. These are quoted individually and we will always agree the price with you before starting.
If you are ever unsure which category something falls into, just ask.
Taking payments (Shop package)
Card payments are handled by Stripe, a payment company used by millions of businesses worldwide.
The Stripe account is yours, in your name. Money from your sales goes directly into your bank account. It does not pass through us at any point, and we take no commission on your sales.
Stripe charges a fee per transaction — at the time of writing roughly 1.5% plus 20p on standard UK cards. That fee is Stripe’s, not ours, and is deducted by them before your payout. Their current rates are published on their website.
Orders, postage and refunds are yours to manage. You fulfil the orders and you decide on refunds; we build and maintain the system that takes the payment.
We will help you set the Stripe account up and connect it before launch.
What we need from you
To build the site we will need photographs of your work, a short piece of writing about you, and your prices. The most common reason a project stalls is waiting on these, so the sooner they arrive the sooner you are live.
If we have not heard from you for 30 days during a build, we may pause the project until you are ready. Nothing is lost — it simply waits for you.
Stopping, pausing and cancelling
You can cancel at any time with 30 days’ notice. No exit fee.
On cancellation your domain is transferred to you and you get a copy of your content — your images, text and any order records.
If a monthly payment fails, we will contact you. If it remains unpaid after 14 days the site may be taken offline temporarily. Nothing is deleted for at least 60 days, so it can always be brought back.
The build fee is not refundable once work has started, as the work has been done.
Ownership
Your words, your photographs and your artwork remain entirely yours. Nothing you give us is used for anything other than building and running your website.
We would like to be able to show your finished site as an example of our work, with a link to it. If you would rather we did not, tell us and we will not.
Responsibility
We will keep your site online and working, but we cannot promise a website will never go down — no one honestly can. If something goes wrong we will fix it as quickly as we are able.
Our responsibility is limited to the fees you have paid us. We are not responsible for losses beyond that, including lost sales, and we are not responsible for outages caused by third parties such as the hosting provider, the domain registrar or Stripe.
Starting work
Because this is a service made specifically for you, work begins as soon as you confirm and pay.
By asking us to start, you are agreeing that work starts straight away and waiving the 14-day cancellation period that would otherwise apply to services bought at a distance.
Accepting
There is nothing to sign. If you are happy with the above, reply confirming which package you would like and that you have read these terms, and we will send an invoice and get started.
These terms apply from the date of your acceptance. Prices quoted are valid for 30 days.
02 — Privacy notice
Who we are
Carrack Studios is the trading name of Locryn Thomas, a sole trader registered in England, of 69 St John’s Street, Hayle, Cornwall, TR27 4LN. We are the data controller for this site.
Any question about your data: locrynthomas@gmail.com.
What we collect
If you email us or send an enquiry: your name, email address, and whatever you choose to tell us about your work. There is no contact form on this site — every “get in touch” link opens your own email app.
The chat widget answers from a fixed list in your browser. Nothing you type in it is sent to us or stored anywhere.
We don’t collect anything else. No analytics, no advertising pixels, no profiling.
Why we hold it
To reply to you, quote for work, and keep records of work we’ve done. That’s a legitimate interest in running a business, and a contract once you become a client.
We never sell it, never share it for marketing, and never use it to train anything.
How long
Enquiries that don’t become work: deleted after 12 months.
Client records: kept for six years after the last invoice, because HMRC requires it.
Who else touches it
Only the services needed to run the site. Vercel hosts it, and like any web host sees standard request logs (your IP address and browser type) when you visit. Email you send us sits with our email provider. For client shops, payments go through Stripe. Each holds it under their own terms and none receive it for their own marketing.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email and we’ll do it within a month, free.
If you think we’ve mishandled your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
